“Lead me from darkness to light, from death to immortality”
According to the Vedas, Antyeshti (अन्त्येष्टि) meaning the ‘last sacrifice’ is the last of the 16 Samskaars and refers to the funeral rites performed on the death of a person. In this final sacrament, the physical body is offered back to nature with god’s blessings.
Our Vedas describe the final rites to be performed in a way that honour the imprints left in our life by the person who lived with us!
Once the soul leaves the body, it journeys into Moksha or the next birth based on its Karma as judged by God, the Almighty. The body, which is left behind should be respectfully disposed in an environmentally friendly way.
The ashes are now part of Mother Earth (Panch Mahabhoot). You may place the same in an earthen pot and simply bury it in the soil or spread it over the fields or immerse it in water bodies (rivers / oceans).
