The Vedic Funeral Rites

The Vedic Funeral Rites

How is the funeral done in the vedic way?

In our society, there are many types of people, followers of many types of beliefs and sects, and according to them, different types of customs and traditions have also been formed or have become popular. It is seen that the tradition of this last rites is performed by different organizations or sects in different ways or styles. Although many practices or traditions have become prevalent, but we have to decide which of these methods is correct? Which tradition is correct? Which one is more profitable? Which one is not harmful or safe for society or for other human beings? Which style is better from the environmental point of view?

In the 15th mantra of the fortieth chapter of the Yajurveda, it is instructed that the last rites should be performed through fire. “Athedam bhasmantam shariram” (Yajurveda 40.15). That is, whatever action is taken with this body, its last action is till the burning of the dead body, beyond that nothing can be done. We come to know from this mantra of Vedas that burning or cremation of the dead body is considered the best way or method.
